Spiced Cran-Apple Fruit Leather

I’ve blogged before about my family’s love of processed junk food (i.e. pop tarts.)  I joked that if I couldn’t beat their love of the sugary stuff, I might as well join them and try to make a better version.  When I flipped through my latest copy of Food Network Magazine and I saw their version of fruit roll ups; and I knew I was going to make them.  My kids (and husband for that matter) LOVE, LOVE, LOVE fruit gummies.  They eat fruit snacks and gummy candies like they’re going out of style.  Two certain Sous Chefs, which shall remain nameless (ahem… “M” and “C”) have been known to have complete and total temper tantrums after they have eaten all the fruit snacks in the house.  As a matter of fact, it was just this evening that my hubby came home from work with giant cookies and offered one to “C” and “C” ran away screaming, “NOOOO WANT COOKIE!  WANT GUMMIE!”  Well this is my spin on a healthier “gummie” and the kids have the added bonus of getting to unroll them.  Any food that also incorporates an activity that provides quiet distraction is always welcome for a mom like me 🙂

 

Spiced Cran-Apple Fruit Leather (adapted from Food Network Magazine)

 

Ingredients:

3 large apples (I used green apples, but I think gala would also work well too)

1 cup cranberry juice (NOT cranberry cocktail)

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preparation:

Spread puree evenly on a parchment lined rimmed baking sheet.  You want the layer to be thin, but not too thin.  Bake for 3 to 4 hours at 200 degrees, or until the leather is no longer sticky. 

Remove from oven and cool.  If the underside of the leather is still sticky, return to the oven for an additional 20 to 30 minutes.  Cut into strips and roll up.  Can be stored in an air tight container for 1 week.

Haha I couldn’t agree with you more on the added bonus of a distraction built into the food! My daughter would totally run away screaming like that over a cookie. They want what they want!

Kids do go crazy over the stuff at the store, but homemade-watch out! This looks easy enough and the cran apple does sound good. I may need to try it. Great post.

This is FANTASTIC. I always used to buy those fruit leathers…and they are really expensive!!! This seems like a much cheaper way to enjoy, and I love making stuff from scratch anyway!
